On June 11, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted pictures of India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill, in a photoshoot that happened ahead of the team’s five-match series against England. During that shoot, Gill posed with his new MRF bat. And all of a sudden, it became a problem, as netizens were irked by a certain motif on the blade.
Prince was written below MRF’s marketing on the willow, which suggested that he is the Prince of Indian cricket. Before Gill, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar were the brand ambassadors of MRF. However, they never used bats with ‘King’ or ‘Master Blaster’ written on them.
While Kohli is popularly known as King Kohli, Tendulkar was often called Master Blaster and the God of cricket.
It was this ‘Prince’ gimmick that didn’t go down well with the audiences, and they vented their displeasure in the form of posts on the popular social media site, X (formerly known as Twitter).
While one user called it cringe, the other termed the use of the word Prince as overhyped for Gill.
India will begin their tour of England with the first of the matches being played at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 onwards.
