Netherlands chased down a target of 370 against Scotland in Dundee in the final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two 2023-27 on June 12 (Thursday), making it the third-highest ODI chase ever.
South Africa 438/9 vs Australia in Johannesburg, 2006 (Target 435)
South Africa 372/6 vs Australia in Durban, 2016 (Target 372)
Netherlands 374/6 vs Scotland in Dundee, 2025 (Target 370)
Thanks to George Munsey’s 191 off 150 - the highest score by an associate batter - Scotland amassed 369/6 in their 50 overs. Apart from the opener, Matthew Cross also slammed 59 off 49 deliveries. Michael Levitt (2/42) was the only Netherlands bowler with an economy of less than 7.
In the run chase, Max O’Dowd and Levitt (44 off 40) got Netherlands off to a fantastic start, adding 67 runs for the opening wicket in 9.2 overs. Scott Edwards chipped in with 32 off 26, but the Netherlands kept losing wickets and were reduced to 168/4 in 25.1 overs.
O’Dowd was going strong from one end and finally found some support from Teja Nidamanuru (51 off 42). The two added 111 runs for the fifth wicket before Nidamanuru got out to Charlie Cassell.
Then came Noah Croes, and he whacked 50 off just 29 deliveries. He got out to Safyaan Sharif in the 48th over, but O’Dowd only left the field once the job was done.
The opener remained unbeaten on 158 off 130 - the highest score by a Netherlands batter - as they got over the line with four deliveries to spare.
158* - Max O'Dowd vs Scotland in Dundee, 2025
137* - Wesley Barresi vs Kenya in Lincoln, 2014
134* - Klaas-Jan van Noortwijk vs Namibia in Bloemfontein in 2003
123 - Bas de Leede vs Scotland in Bulawayo in 2023
In 2023, the Men in Orange were set a target of 375 by the West Indies, and the match ended in a tie, with the Netherlands winning the Super Over. However, that won’t be counted as a successful run-chase as the Netherlands had to rely on a Super Over to win the game.
