How were the last two seasons?
Well, exciting is the word!
Mumbai Indians (MI) won the first edition after dominating the league throughout and defeated the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final with ease to lift the inaugural WPL trophy. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finished fourth, with the non-Indian Premier League franchise UP Warriorz (UPW) and Gujarat Giants (GG) finishing third and fifth, respectively.
In the 2024 season, RCB lifted the trophy by defeating DC in the final. The season saw a much higher level of competition, with the teams pushing each other hard. MI finished third, with UPW and GG being fourth and fifth, respectively.
What’s new this season?
The WPL will be played in four venues this year. It will start off in Vadodara where six games will be played, then move onto Bengaluru where the M Chinnaswamy stadium will host eight games. Then Lucknow and at last Mumbai will host four games each. The eliminator and the final will be played in Mumbai.
What’s the format?
Each team will play the other four teams twice in the group stage, and at the end of that, the top side will qualify for the final at Brabourne Stadium directly. The second and third placed team will play the Eliminator game, with the winner of that making it to the final.
Since the tournament will last a month and only 22 games will be played overall, there will be no double-headers.
Which big players are missing this season?
Alyssa Healy, Kate Cross, Sophie Molineux and Kate Cross have been the injury casualties this season, with Chinelle Henry, Heather Graham, and Charlie Dean being their respective replacements.
Meanwhile, Sophie Devine has taken a break from cricket and has been replaced by Kim Garth. Deepti Sharma has also replaced Healy as the skipper of UPW, with Ash Gardner taking captaincy duties from Beth Mooney.
Is there any change to the associate player rule in the playing XI?
No!
Even this year, teams will be allowed to play five overseas players instead of four if the fifth player is from an overseas nation. Sarah Bryce of the Delhi Capitals is the only associate player this year.
Before this, her sister Kathryn Bryce played for Gujarat Giants in 2024, and Tara Norris of the USA played for DC in 2023.
