Pat Cummins Feels WTC Final 2025 Will Be Different From Usual India-Australia Finale
Cummins will be leading Australia in a final of a world event against a team other than India, for the first time.
In the last two major events, apart from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, it has been an India-Australia final and in both cases, Pat Cummins has been the captain. Be it the 2023 ODI World Cup or the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC), where Australia were victorious.
However, this time around, Cummins will be in a world event final against a different team -- South Africa, in the WTC 2025 Final. Cummins believes that it will be different from the usual India-Australia final.
“In some ways you expect India to be around. England have been quite strong at home and New Zealand always seem to get to finals. But the same case could be made for South Africa in ICC events.”
“We just don’t see a lot of them in Test cricket, but it’s nice and different to an Australia-India final," Cummins was quoted as saying by Indian Express on June 10, ahead of the start of the WTC Final on June 11.
Cummins also downplayed that South Africa got an easy passage to the final, compared to the Australians. South Africa only played a total of 12 Tests, out of which they played India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home and New Zealand, Bangladesh and West Indies away.
“It’s hard to say because there are so many unknowns. We haven’t played them much, but you’ve got to be really well-balanced to make the final. Their bowling has always stood out, and it’s no different now. [Keshav] Maharaj is a really solid spinner, and they’ve always got plenty of quick bowlers who pose a challenge,” Cummins said.
