After International Retirement, Nicholas Pooran Takes Over As MI New York Captain

The 29-year-old takes over the reins from Kieron Pollard

One of the most feared batters in the world, Nicholas Pooran, has been appointed MI New York (MINY) captain for the upcoming season of Major League Cricket (MLC), a day after he announced his international retirement. Pooran takes over from fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard, who led the team last year.

Pooran played a vital role in MINY winning their maiden title in 2023, scoring 388 runs, including a blazing 137* in the final against Seattle Orcas, but could not have the same impact last year.

"Our hero, our ledge, our skipper! Nicholas Pooran – the 29-year-old pocket dynamite, aka the MINY superstar – has been named the MI New York captain ahead of the 2025 season of the Major League Cricket," said the franchise in a media release.

Pooran is in excellent form at the moment, having scored 524 runs at a strike rate of 196.3 for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Moreover, he hit 40 sixes, the most by any player last season.

"This left-handed wicket-keeper batter is one of the world's most feared batters going around. At the peak of his powers currently, he's all set to take us to greater glories under his leadership," added the release.

MINY begin their MLC 2025 campaign against the Texas Super Kings (TSK) in Oakland on June 13 (Friday).
